I own an mac, and its replaced lupin, my debian box, as my everyday
work machine, mainly because I can carry it around with me. I
generally wonder which I prefer:
Mac Pros and Cons
- Its generally well put together. Stuff just works, I spend litle
time poking it
- When it doesn't work, you have no idea what whent wrong.
- There doesn't seem to be a standard way to install unix stuff.
There are two different systems, macports and fink, but these don't
really work well together, which makes package mangement a pain.
- Safari is fine for small stuff, but doesn't really play well with
my style of having 30 tabs open.
- Itunes. stop trying to sell me stuff.
- It supports office, which people make me use
- Quicktime is the work of the devil
- reboots for small stuff is annoying. stop it.
Debian pros and cons
- One word: apt. The idea that there are systems without a sane way
of handling installs of software is a bit like going somewhere without
a toliet. Its ok for a while, but for long term use its going to get
messy.
- The ability to upgrade bits ofthe system without having to reboot.
Once again, the idea there are systems that need a reboot after
installing a bit of software is just bad.
- Releases? what are they?
- mmm, flamewars
- Everything has a man page. Everything has standard ways of doing
stuff.
- Set up time is long
It seems a waste, but I'll list more when they come to mind.
